Ashwagandha and SSRIs (General): Interaction Overview
Ashwagandha may weakly modulate serotonergic activity through GABA-A receptor binding and cortisol reduction, potentially mildly enhancing SSRI effects.
Mechanism of Interaction
Ashwagandha may weakly modulate serotonergic activity through GABA-A receptor binding and cortisol reduction, potentially mildly enhancing SSRI effects. This is generally considered additive at most, not dangerous — but the combination may cause excessive sedation or mood flattening in some individuals. Triethylene glycol and withanolide glycosides may also have mild serotonergic effects.
Recommendation
Many people take ashwagandha alongside SSRIs without issues. Start with a lower dose (300mg KSM-66) and monitor for increased drowsiness, unusual mood changes, or sexual dysfunction (rare). Inform your prescribing doctor.
