Blood Thinners and Ginkgo Biloba: Interaction Overview
Ginkgo biloba inhibits platelet-activating factor (PAF) via ginkgolide B, reducing platelet aggregation.
Mechanism of Interaction
Ginkgo biloba inhibits platelet-activating factor (PAF) via ginkgolide B, reducing platelet aggregation. Combined with warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or novel anticoagulants (rivaroxaban, apixaban), the anticoagulant effect is potentiated, substantially raising risk of uncontrolled bleeding, internal hemorrhage, and hemorrhagic stroke. Multiple case reports document this interaction.
Recommendation
Avoid combining. If ginkgo is desired for cognitive effects while on anticoagulation therapy, discuss with your hematologist or prescribing physician — INR monitoring and dose adjustment may be needed. Stop ginkgo at least 36 hours before any surgical procedure.
