Blood Thinners and Piracetam: Interaction Overview
Piracetam reduces blood viscosity, inhibits platelet aggregation, and has anticoagulant effects via phospholipid membrane modulation.
Mechanism of Interaction
Piracetam reduces blood viscosity, inhibits platelet aggregation, and has anticoagulant effects via phospholipid membrane modulation. Combined with warfarin, aspirin, or other anticoagulants (heparin, rivaroxaban, apixaban), the risk of dangerous bleeding events — including internal bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke — is substantially elevated. This interaction is well-documented in the pharmacological literature.
Recommendation
Avoid entirely if on prescribed anticoagulants or antiplatelet therapy. Also use caution with high-dose fish oil (>3g/day), ginkgo biloba, and vitamin E, all of which have antiplatelet effects.
