Rhodiola Rosea and SSRIs (General): Interaction Overview
Rhodiola's active compounds (rosavin, salidroside) have been shown to weakly inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO-A and MAO-B) and serotonin reuptake.
Mechanism of Interaction
Rhodiola's active compounds (rosavin, salidroside) have been shown to weakly inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO-A and MAO-B) and serotonin reuptake. Combined with SSRIs, this could elevate serotonin levels. At standard supplemental doses (200–400mg), the risk is low; at higher doses or with strong SSRIs, the risk of mild serotonin-related side effects (restlessness, agitation, palpitations) increases.
Recommendation
Use caution. If combining, stick to standard doses (200–400mg rhodiola standardized to 3% rosavins) and introduce slowly. Watch for signs of serotonin excess: agitation, sweating, tremor, diarrhea. Discuss with your prescribing physician.
